POSITION: Lead Ophthalmic Technician
DEPARTMENT: Clinical
REPORTS TO: Practice Administrator
JOB SUMMARY: This individual is responsible for oversight and management of all clinical staff, and the supervision of all patient care processes.
This includes ensuring all patient testing is appropriately scheduled, performed and documented.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Certified as ophthalmic technician or medical technologist.
Five years experience in supervision of clinical operations.
Working knowledge of all aspects regarding ophthalmic care.
Demonstrated skills in motivating and training professional staff.
College degree preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Personnel Management
Assists in recruiting, hiring, training, and disciplinary action of technical personnel under supervision of practice administrator.
Supervises technical personnel, including preparing and monitoring job descriptions and personnel evaluations; assists with salary reviews for technical staff.
Develops and maintains a training program for clinical staff, including the immediate supervision of untrained assistants.
Appropriately schedules technical staff in accordance with clinic needs; approves time off requests for technical staff.
Organizes and conducts regular meetings of technical staff; participates in regular management team meetings.
Consults with practice administrator on problems and interpretation of policies to ensure patient needs are met.
Develops and implements protocols for continuing education of technical staff.
Plans and organizes quarterly in-service training programs.
Clinic Responsibilities
Performs patient work-ups and diagnostic testing as required by most senior level clinical staff.
Answers patient questions and telephone inquiries, including but not limited to, attaining resolution to patient problems.
Ensures all clinic equipment is functioning properly; requests repairs and maintenance, as needed.
Triage
Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated.
Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
Triages phone calls from patients, when necessary, to ensure appointment is scheduled in a timely manner.
Administrative
Maintains inventory levels; orders all clinical supplies.
Manages OSHA policies and procedures; maintains updated OSHA manual.
Participates on Safety Committee.
Schedules all preventative maintenance on covered instrumentation.
Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment; calls repair companies as necessary.
Provides back-up support to other technicians, including returning patient phone calls, managing prescription refills, and responding to contact lens calls.
Assists with patient check-in and check-out as needed.
Assists with appointment scheduling and surgery scheduling as needed.
Performs other tasks as required
