Retablo Oil Painting on Tin Saint Joseph and Christ Child Religious Latin America, Mexico, ca.
late 19th century CE.
A finely painted retablo on heavy gauge tin depicting a crowned St.
Joseph (San Jose) standing in flowing vestments of green with red and gold sleeve and collar.
He tenderly cradles the infant Jesus, who is dressed in flowing red and gold draperies.
San Jose also holds a staff in his right arm against his body of with red roses at the top.
The Christ Child in turn holds a Cross, representing his Christian dominion, in his right hand as he rests his head while sleeping in St.
Joseph's arms.
The retablo is mounted in an unusual antique custom hand-painted gold-leaf frame.
Each corner depicts an angel painted on tin (mini-retablos) with hand-painted floral designs in between.
Condition: Fair to Good for age.
Expected age wear with some scuffs/scratches, pigment loss and bending in top and lower sections, areas of oxidation and other bending to peripheries/corners, however, the imagery is still quite vivid.
Overall Beautiful vibrant colors and detail.
